Tips for Starting with Google Mail

  1. Inbox - The default Inbox is different to what you would be used to with Outlook where messages are displayed against categories, not just the Inbox. You’ll need to decide whether to keep the default Category mode, return to the Classic Inbox or even try the Priority Inbox (this last one is recommended)
  2. Add Email Signature - You'll need to setup your signature again when you start using Google Mail. Hint - Copy your signature from a recent sent email from Google Mail.
  3. Calendars - Make sure you know how to access and share your Google Calendar as it is no longer attached to Mail and works in a separate browser tab.
  4. Labs - There are two Google Labs that you can use to make your Inbox look a bit more like Outlook. Hint - Use these if you want to preview messages
  5. Themes - Colour and Style your Inbox to how you like it and remember to check other settings in Google Mail.
  6. Add your profile image - Teachers may choose to do this, so it is visible to students who they are receiving an email from or sharing a document with.
  7. Language & Input Tools - Set your GAFE account on the web to work with Australian metrics. - How to Video
  8. Train your Inbox - You will need to check your SPAM folder in Google Drive and flag messages which are or are not SPAM. Once you've selected a few messages, Google will learn how you use email and you will get less valid email in your SPAM folder.
